Tom Moorhouse |
Tom Moorhouse grew up liking the smell of sweaty horses and mesquite fire. He was raised on a ranch in West Texas and muses that the “western lifestyle is born and bred in me and I don’t think I could change it if I wanted to.” Moorhouse was born in Knox City, earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Sul Ross, and operates a ranch in Benjamin. His grandfather ran cattle in the Indian Nations before moving to King County in 1906, and the family has been ranching in the area ever since. Buster Welch calls Tom Moorhouse “one of the top men I’ve watched handle cattle, horses, and cowboys. He is a model of a true Texas cowboy.” Moorhouse is a cowboy’s cowboy, running a cattle crew almost year around, mostly out of a chuck wagon. Not one to sing his own praises, Moorhouse has won the Foy Proctor Memorial Cowman Award of Honor and the Texas Cowboy Reunion’s Working Ranch Cowboy Award. He was the Texas Ranch Rodeo’s Top Hand in 1981 and 1995 as well as the Western Heritage Classic’s Top Hand in 2004. |
