Jimmie Gibbs Munroe has rodeo in her blood. Her maternal grandfather, Colonel Zack Miller, was one of the three Miller brothers who founded the famous 101 Wild West Show, a forerunner of rodeo as we know it today. Born in Waco, Jimmie graduated from Sam Houston State University where she was a national intercollegiate all-around and barrel racing champion. Like her husband Bud, she served on the NIRA’s board of directors before becoming an active member of the Womens Professional Rodeo Association, a group she served as President from 1979-1993. She lead the WPRA in obtaining equal prize money to the men, obtaining national sponsors, and securing the mandatory use of electric timers and better arena conditions. Jimmie competed at 11 NFR’s on three different horses, and in 1975 was the WPRA World Barrel Racing Champion, World Champion Tie-down Roper, and All-Around Champion. She was the top money-winner of any contestant at the 1984 NFR. She was honored in 1990 as the Coca-Cola Woman of the Year and was named the WPRA’s Pioneer Award winner in 1999. She is an inductee of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and won the Tad Lucas Award at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1996. Jimmie currently conducts horsemanship and barrel racing clinics worldwide and serves on the boards of the National Cowgirl Museum and the Rodeo Historical Society. |
