Greg, the son of legendary cutter Buster Welch, was a champion in his own right, demonstrating that he could haul for year-end titles as well as win major aged events. He was the former president of the NCHA.

Tenino San was ridden by Greg to the title of 1992 NCHA World Champion.He rode Little Tenina to the championship of the 1991 NCHA Futurity, the 1992 NCHA Derby and the 1993 NCHA 5 year-old classic. Okay Peppy and Greg won the 1992 NCHA Eastern National Championship Novice. He also has won the NCHA Finals Show four times - 1993   on Little Tenina, 1987 with a then record score of 230.5 on Haidas Little Pep, 1986 on Lil Peppys Belle and 1983 on Tenino San. Greg also has won over 20 other major aged events, including six on Little Tenina.

Greg was inducted  into the NCHA Riders Hall of Fame during the 1990 NCHA Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas, joining Buster, who is a member of the NCHA Riders Hall of Fame. Buster also is a member of the NCHA Members Hall of Fame.

"I grew up riding cutting horses and dad is still teaching me," said Greg, who started his horse career in rodeo, but later decided to take up training cutting horses for a living. "Anytime I'm in trouble, I run out to his house. You can't learn from anybody better. He's still the master."
