Raisers
Museum
, National

Museum
and Hall of Fame, Imagination Celebration, and the Tarrant Area Guild
of Storytellers, is bringing storytelling into the classroom and the
community.
Funded by a grant from the
Institute
of
Museum
and Library Services, the M.U.S.E. (Museums Utilizing Storytelling for
Education) project provides storytellers-in-residence to participating
Fort Worth ISD classes of second and third graders.
Nash, Helbing, Oakhurst, and
Green
Elementary Schools
and
Daggett
Montessori
School
applied and were selected to participate in the program this year.
In their classrooms, the students
learn the elements of a story in both written and oral formats.
They are then treated to a trip to one of the participating
museums where they not only hear Western stories told, but they view
the museum’s collections, choosing a painting, an object, or an
individual from the museum as the subject of their own story.
Museum docents and members of the storytellers’ guild
facilitate the students in formulating notes and ideas to take back to
the classroom as the basis for composing their stories.
The MUSE Project also funds a trip to the Central Library where
students can research ideas for their stories.
In conjunction with storytelling
in the classrooms, passes to each participating museum are available
for check out from the Fort Worth Public Library, allowing members of
the community to visit the museums free of charge.
